IVAN DRENIKOV is one of the most outstanding Bulgarian pianists acclaimed throughout the world. His art is based on the new achievements as well as on the traditions of piano playing in Bulgaria, his technique stems from the synthesis of several schools. Clearly manifest are his strict professionalism and his modem feeling for the piano, his exquisite technique and the balance between reason and emotion, his constant aspiration towards perfection - features that make him one of the most brilliant representatives of Bulgarian art of performing. For many years he has been the first concert pianist of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Ivan Drenikov was born in Sofia and is a graduate of the Bulgarian State Conservatoire in Sofia, the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome and the Musical Academy in Vienna (on a Herder grant). He was Pantcho Vladiguerov's and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's favourite student; Richard Hauser, his teacher in Vienna, greatly admired his talent, comparing him to Horowitz. Ivan Drenikov's appearance at the Busoni Competition in Italy when lie was only eighteen, caused a great stir. There were one hundred competitors there and he was awarded third prize. G. Confalognieri, the most influential music critic in Italy, exclaimed in the Epoca magazine, Milano: "Ivan Drenikov has got the charm of a concert pianist in every detail. He is aware of the magic of colours and can always establish contact with the audience in a most subtle way..." in an article called Revelation of the year. A number of concerts with RAI Rome, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra under Carlo Zecchi and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra followed. In 1968 Ivan Drenikov became a regular student of the great pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in his courses in Bergamo, Lugano and San Bernardo Rabbi. Drenikov was a frequent guest at Michelangelli's house and enjoyed the professional advice and respect of the great pianist in his personal contact with him. A musician of great influence in Prague, Bucharest, Moscow, Leningrad, Warsaw, Drenikov had concerts with great success also in the ISA.' South America, Australia, Japan and almost all European countries, with orchestras like the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Bayrische Rundfunk Orchester, Paris Orchestra Ensemble, French Radio Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Royal Philharmonic and others. When Alexis Weissenberg first heard Ivan Drenikov in 1976, he exclaimed, "Thanks to his strong individuality and musical intelligence, to his artistic temperament and technical accomplishment, Ivan Drenikov is one of those pianists to whom the future belongs" and Pierre Petit called him "A revelation!" (Figaro, Paris 1985). Ivan Drenikov has done a number of records for Balkanton which are sold not only in Bulgaria but by record companies abroad such isHarmoniaMundi, Forlane, Fidelio, Pyramiek, Monitor, Sound Product, Verany.
